Le tabac est une plante rudérale*, annuelle, qui présente des tiges herbacées. Selon les espèces, la plante peut mesurer plus de deux mètres (Nicotiana tabacum) à moins d'un mètre (Nicotiana rustica).
*Rudérale : se dit d'une plante qui croît dans les ruines, parmi les décombres.

Propriétés, composition |
Le tabac doit principalement à un alcaloïde, la nicotine, ses qualités organoleptiques; on la trouve dans toutes les parties de la plante. La teneur varie de 1 à 10 % suivant les espèces et variétés. La nicotine est très toxique. Elle est associée à un autre principe actif, la nicotianine, qui paraît communiquer au tabac son arôme spécifique Source : http://www.congonline.com
